CIPÓ in El País: “Current World Order, Besides Being Unjust, Is Dysfunctional”

Plataforma CIPÓ’s Executive Director, Maiara Folly, commented in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El País on the entry of six new members into the BRICS. The bloc was initially formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

According to her, the expansion is very natural for the group, which takes a critical stance towards the G7, a club considered exclusivist for not reflecting the world’s current political and economic power distribution. Chinese President Xi Jinping also welcomed the decision: “This expansion is historic.”

Folly argues that both the new expanded BRICS and the G-20 are forums that “can be useful spaces for coordinating a reform of the UN system, which is urgent. The current world order, besides being unjust, is dysfunctional in addressing urgencies such as security crises, climate change, or poverty.”
