Plataforma CIPÓ has endorsed an open letter addressed to the G20 Finance Ministers and Heads of State, calling for stricter financial regulations to curb global biodiversity loss. The document highlights that $7 trillion was allocated in 2023 to activities harmful to nature, exacerbating mass extinction and threatening ecological balance.
The letter stresses the need to integrate biodiversity and human rights criteria into financial sector regulations as a way to align these policies with the UN Global Biodiversity Framework. It also advocates for concrete actions, such as increased transparency in investments, holding financial institutions accountable, and creating due diligence mechanisms to prevent environmental and human rights violations.
With the G20 Summit approaching in November in Brazil, the letter appeals to global leaders for urgent reform of the financial system, aiming to ensure a more sustainable and just future for the planet.
