China in the Brazilian Amazon: examining the relationship between the growth in commodity exports and deforestation

CIPÓ develops and carries out methodologies for mapping and analyzing the main stakeholders and their performance, capabilities, and gaps. Based on the collection of data and creation of databases that allow us to systematically identify the dynamics and impacts of different actors, CIPÓ issues publications on topics such as environmental crimes, international cooperation, and climate governance. As part of its work on environmental crimes in Brazil, Plataforma CIPÓ, in partnership with Lagom Data, has produced a series of interactive infographics and databases containing data and information on:

• Export patterns in the Amazon based on data by municipality.
• Evolution of deforestation in the period 2000-2020 in municipalities in the Legal Amazon.

A more in-depth analysis of the methodology and data that give rise to the interactive graphs available below can be found in the strategic report “China in the Brazilian Amazon: examining the relationship between the growth in commodity exports and deforestation”.

Follow the analysis on the next slides.

What do the municipalities of the Legal Amazon export?

The map allows visualizing which products are exported by the municipalities of the Legal Amazon, considering the commodities cotton, meat, copper, timer, soy, and their combinations.

By hovering the cursor over the map, it is possible to visualize the increase in the deforested area and which products were exported during the analyzed period.

Deforestation and exporting municipalities

The map makes it possible to identify the variation in deforestation in the exporting municipalities.

By hovering the cursor over the map, it is possible to visualize the increase in the deforested area and which products were exported during the analyzed period.

Deforestation year by year

By pressing play, it is possible to visualize the progress of deforestation year by year in the exporting municipalities (2000-2020).

Proportional increase in deforestation (2000-2020)

This table allows analyzing the proportional increase in deforestation and the percentage and extent of deforested area in cities exporting to China year by year (2000-2020), in addition to the type and volume of exported product.

The chart below shows the 20 municipalities in the Legal Amazon that export meat, iron, timber and soy to China that had the greatest increase in deforested area between 2000 and 2020, year by year.

By hovering the cursor over the chart, it is possible to modify the municipality to visualize the relationship between exports and deforestation, identifying which are the main products.

The graph below allows the visualization of the absolute growth of deforestation in the 20 municipalities with the greatest increase in the analyzed period.

By hovering the cursor over the chart, it is possible to modify the municipality to visualize the relationship between exports and deforestation, identifying which are the main products.

Exporting municipalities with the largest extension of deforested area

In this table, the 20 exporting municipalities with the largest deforested area in 20 years stand out.

You can see the variation in the extent of deforestation over the years:

By hovering the cursor over the chart, it is possible to modify the municipality to visualize the relationship between exports and deforestation, identifying which are the main products.

Exporters and their products

In this interactive table, it is possible to analyze the deforested area, difference in km2 (2000-2020), the percentage of deforestation and the export volume of selected products in all the analyzed municipalities.

By hovering the cursor over the chart, it is possible to modify the municipality to visualize the relationship between exports and deforestation, identifying which are the main products.

Investigating timber, soy and deforestation

This map allows viewing the volume of soybeans and timber exported to China and the proportion of deforested area per municipality in the Legal Amazon (2000-2020).

By hovering the cursor over the map, it is possible to visualize the increase in the deforested area and which products were exported during the analyzed period.

In this graph, it is possible to cross-reference the data of the municipalities with the largest area of deforested area with the export of timber and soy:

By hovering the cursor over the map, it is possible to visualize the increase in the deforested area and which products were exported during the analyzed period.

This database does not attribute a direct effect between deforestation and the export of commodities to China, but it seeks to provide inputs for analysis of the socio-environmental impacts of the advance of the agricultural frontier in the Amazon, accelerated by the high Chinese demand.
