CIPÓ signs joint letter with recommendations to the UN on critical minerals for the energy transition

Plataforma CIPÓ is among more than 130 civil society organizations from different countries that signed a joint letter presented to United Nations Member States during the High-Level Meeting on Critical Energy Transition Minerals (CETM), held on 14 July 2026 in New York.

The initiative brings together organizations working on climate, development, human rights, sustainability, and Indigenous Peoples’ rights. The letter, published by the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI), was delivered by a civil society delegation during the meeting and sets out recommendations to strengthen international cooperation and promote fairer, more equitable, and more transparent critical mineral value chains.

The document highlights that growing demand for critical minerals—driven by the energy transition, green technologies, artificial intelligence, and other strategic sectors—has intensified pressure on producing countries, local communities, and Indigenous Peoples. In light of this context, the organizations call for international cooperation to take precedence over geopolitical competition and for the expansion of mineral supply chains to be accompanied by robust safeguards for human rights, environmental protection, and the sovereignty of producing countries.

Among the recommendations addressed to UN Member States are support for producing countries in implementing the UN Secretary-General’s Panel Guiding Principles on Critical Energy Transition Minerals; maintaining justice and equity in mineral governance as a priority for the next Secretary-General of the United Nations; strengthening international cooperation; aligning the strategies of multilateral development banks with these principles; and expanding the meaningful participation of Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and other directly affected groups in decision-making processes.

The full letter and the complete list of signatory organizations are available on the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) website. (NRGI).
