Plataforma CIPÓ, together with 20 other civil society organizations, signed a letter to the members of the UN Security Council with recommendations for the final stretch of the selection process for the next UN Secretary-General.
Among its main requests, the letter urges the Council to publish the results of all straw polls on the candidates and to avoid using color-coded ballots, which distinguish between the votes of permanent and non-permanent members. It also calls on the Council to recognize the importance of the dialogues with the candidates held in the General Assembly, to support the principle that all candidates be held to the same standards of public scrutiny ahead of the straw polls, and to adopt transparent and objective criteria for assessing candidacies, based on formal qualifications and competencies widely recognized by Member States and civil society.
The letter, along with the first batch of signatures, was delivered to Security Council members on September 10 and remained open to new signatories until the end of the UN General Assembly’s High-Level Week.
