Ahead of COP17 of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), civil society organizations, knowledge institutions and other non-state actors have launched a call for greater integration across global responses to climate change, biodiversity loss and land degradation.
Plataforma CIPÓ is part of the initiative, coordinated by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and the Igarapé Institute.
The Call to Action: Strengthening Climate, Nature and Land Synergies advocates for stronger coordination among the three Rio Conventions and highlights a central challenge: while the climate, biodiversity and land degradation crises are deeply interconnected, international responses are still often designed and implemented in a fragmented manner.
The launch comes at a strategic moment. From 17 to 28 August, Mongolia is hosting UNCCD COP17, which will place issues such as land restoration, drought resilience, water, food systems, soil health and finance at the center of negotiations.
The call emphasizes that climate, biodiversity and land are inseparable agendas, and that strengthening cooperation among the Rio Conventions is essential to translate international commitments into more coordinated and effective action on the ground.
