G20 Should Lead the Construction of Fairer and More Sustainable Global Value Chains, Says Study

The policy brief “Fair Rules and Positive Incentives: The Role of the G20 in Building Just and Sustainable Global Value Chains,” co-authored by Maiara Folly, Plataforma CIPÓ’s Executive Director, and Kieran Mitton from King’s College London, is now available for download on the T20 website. Produced by T20 Task Force 4, the document highlights the crucial role the G20 can play in promoting more equitable and sustainable global value chains.

The brief underscores how global demand for commodities is directly linked to environmental destruction, particularly in endangered forests and biomes. However, global governance has thus far failed to establish a comprehensive multilateral framework to regulate these value chains in a socially and environmentally responsible way. The policy brief argues that the G20 should adopt normative and policy measures to enhance international cooperation, promoting rules that ensure value chain sustainability while upholding the principle of Common But Differentiated Responsibilities.

Additionally, the publication suggests the creation of a facility to assist producers in developing countries in meeting rigorous environmental standards without being excluded from these value chains, providing them with technical and financial support.
