In defense of civil society: Open Letter on Legal Bill 1595

On March 23, 2021, CIPÓ signed a letter endorsed by more than one hundred civil society entities against the installation of a special commission on Bill no. 1595/19, which aims to provide for counterterrorist actions and alters Laws 10.257, of July 10, 2001, and 9.807, of July 13, 1999, among other provisions.

“The purpose of the bill is to foster new forms of controlling society, and its objective is to criminalize the actions of leaders, grassroots movements and civil society organizations. If approved, it will bring enormous setbacks and losses to the democratic space in our country.”

The note argues that the proposed special commission should not be set up as long as the obstacles to social participation and broad public debate persist due to the pandemic of COVID-19.

The press released a note about the document (in Portuguese), also signed by ARTICLE 19, Global Justice, Transparency International, the Socioenvironmental Institute (ISA), the Ecological Research Institute (IPÊ) and Fundação SOS Mata Atlântica, among others.
