On GloboNews, CIPÓ comments on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals

On the eve of World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5th, the executive director of Plataforma CIPÓ, Maiara Folly, participated in the program “Cidades e Soluções” on GloboNews. The special edition discussed how Brazil is progressing in terms of implementing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

According to Folly, international cooperation, including among developing countries, known as South-South cooperation, can be a valuable complement to domestic policies. As an example, Folly mentioned the alliance between Brazil, Indonesia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which together hold 52% of all remaining primary tropical forests in the world.

“[Eles] “They may have greater bargaining power if they coordinate politically to demand that developed countries fulfill their climate finance promises,” she said.

The executive director also spoke about the setbacks observed regarding climate change. “Unfortunately, we have seen that countries are still reliant on fossil fuels,” she pointed out. “”So, currently, we are not on track to implement the Paris Agreement’s emissions reduction targets.”
