On Observatório do Clima, CIPÓ addresses the choice to host COP30 in Belém

Flávia do Amaral Vieira, a Belém-based researcher from Plataforma CIPÓ, was interviewed by Observatório do Clima regarding the potential selection of Belém to host the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 2025.

Brazil’s candidacy was announced on May 26th by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and still requires endorsement from the United Nations. In the announcement video, Governor Helder Barbalho of Pará spoke about the state’s commitment to environmental and sustainable development agendas. phasing out fossil fuels is “something for 50 years from now.”

“If we don’t change our energy matrix, the world will become even warmer. What conditions will we have to promote sustainable development?” the researcher questioned. “We need to rethink our economic development model in a way that aligns with the socio-biodiversity of the Amazon and Brazil,” she added.

The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) synthesis report also emphasized in March that the world needs to immediately curb fossil fuel production and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 43% by 2030.
