Climate and Geopolitics: CIPÓ takes part in 2022 Doha Forum (Qatar)

In March 2022, Plataforma CIPÓ debated climate change and geopolitics at the Doha Forum, in Qatar. This year’s edition of the two-day policy forum welcomed more than 200 leaders to debate some of the world’s most challenging issues. In particular, speakers debated the forum’s key theme of ‘Transforming for a New Era’. The main focus was on four key areas: Geopolitical Alliances and International Relations; the Financial System and Economic Development; Defense, Cyber and Food Security; and Climate Change and Sustainability.

CIPÓ participated in the workshop An Agenda for Climate Governance and Green, Broad-Based Recovery, co-organized by the Doha Forum, Stimson Center, Climate Governance Commission, and the Global Governance Innovation Network (GGIN), of which CIPÓ is a founding member. The debate explored questions such as:
● What are the chief dimensions of a Broad-based and Green Recovery Agenda that also can serve to advance the Paris Climate Agreement’s Goals, including efforts to continuously ratchet-up the ambition of the agreement’s associated Nationally Determined Contributions?
● How effective is the international community, including through such global bodies as the UN, G20, WTO, World Bank, and IMF, in pulling together in a decisive and coherent fashion to mitigate against the twin COVID-19 and climate crises’ most acute effects over the short, medium, and long-term?
● What institutional, legal, and normative changes are required to improve climate governance to avoid exceeding the target of 1.5℃ temperature rise beyond pre-industrial levels (which implies that the international community must emit 45 percent less carbon dioxide than 2010 levels by 2030—and then achieve net-zero emissions by 2050)?
