CIPÓ endorsed an open letter to European Union states on the proposed Regulation on Deforestation- and Conversion-Free Products. The initiative was led by Rede Cerrado, a 30-year-old network that includes more than 300 civil society and community-based organizations covering the entire biome.
The letter recognizes the efforts of the European Union to develop rules that protect the planet’s socio-biodiversity, but requires that its proposed regulation include ecosystems such as savannas and grasslands in its scope, in addition to reaffirming the need for the respect of human rights and compliance with the International Labour Organization Convention 169 on the right to free, prior and informed consent by local communities.
