UN Research: CIPÓ Executive Director is elected to the Board of Directors of ACUNS

The Executive Director of Plataforma CIPÓ, Adriana Abdenur, was elected as a member of the Board of Directors of the Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS). The election took place online was the results were confirmed in Geneva, Switzerland, on June 23, during the annual meeting of ACUNS. The term of office lasts for 4 years.

Dr. Abdenur’s admission to the Council is an important step towards the accessibility of Brazilian researchers and initiatives in the elaboration of strategies for strengthening and reformulating the United Nations (UN) system.

For Abdenur, this will be an opportunity to strengthen ties between academic production and policy making: “I am very honored to be a member of the Council and look forward to working to strengthen the association and increase the role of scholars from the Global South in research and policy debates on the United Nations and, more broadly, global governance,” she stated.

The Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS) unites people active in the work and study of the UN, in order to better understand and address the most pressing global issues of our time – not only war, but also climate change, pandemic disease, new weapons, displacement, inequality, bigotry and extremism that threaten global well-being.

Because these challenges disregard borders, no sovereign nation will succeed in countering them alone. Solutions to improve the human condition will only be advanced through evidence-based analysis, international legal agreement, and multilateral action.

As the only institution with worldwide membership, an effective United Nations is an existential imperative for the global good. ACUNS serves to foster well-studied action in the UN system.

Council origin

ACUNS was established in 1987 by a group of concerned scholars at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, USA. They envisioned a professional association that would unite students, scholars, advisers, practitioners and policy makers, representing a wide array of disciplines and sectors, focusing on evidence-based analysis of the UN system.

Since that time, five institutions of higher education have ably hosted ACUNS. In 2020, ACUNS became an independent nonprofit organization, providing a durable foundation for future development. Today, ACUNS is a global network of individuals and institutions associated with the study and work of the UN.
