On May 25, 2021, CIPÓ took part in the webinar “Climate-sensitive Programming for Sustaining Peace,” jointly organized by Adelphi and the United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC). The event brought together practitioners and UN specialists to discuss first-hand experience of implementing an integrated climate and security programme from different contexts, focusing on lessons learned, what works and what does not work, and why.
Executive Director Adriana Erthal Abdenur presented on CIPÓ’s ongoing research into climate impacts and responses within the context of the Venezuelan refugee crisis, focusing on Brazilian responses on the Venezuelan border and the voluntary resettlement programme run by Operação Acolhida (“Operation Welcome”), the humanitarian multi-stakeholder arrangement developed by the Brazilian government to coordinate efforts by civil society, the Armed Forces, and international organizations. The research adopts a mainstreamed gender perspective into climate and migration.
