On May 4 2022, Plataforma CIPÓ took part in the Foreign Policy and Security Seminar, organized by the Center for Economic and Social Progress (CSEP), based in New Delhi, India. The session, titled “Studying China’s Global Influence: Infrastructure Projects and Conflict Mediation,” was part of a three-debate series on “China’s Global Influence.”
The panel featured two presenters. Adriana Abdenur, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Plataforma CIPÓ, spoke on socio-environmental aspects of Chinese investments in railway infrastructure projects in Brazil in light of ongoing geopolitical changes. Yun Sun, Senior Fellow and Director of the China Program at the Stimson Center, Washington DC, presented on China’s role in conflict mediation with cases from Myanmar and Afghanistan.
The closed-door, online seminar series “China’s Global Influence” is part of a research project at CSEP on “China’s Influence in South Asia” that is co-led by Dr. Constantino Xavier, Ambassador Shivshankar Menon and Prof. Jabin Jacob. It complements CSEP’s South Asia focus by showcasing comparative research about China’s influence in other regions of the world. With contributors from India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, the project examines China’s growing role in South Asia across a range of sectors such as education, public diplomacy, technology, social media, politics, religion, and governance.
