CIPÓ and over 230 civil society organizations and social movements joined a group of 40 renowned artists for an Act for the Earth (Ato pela Terra), which took place in Brasília on March 9, 2022 in front of the National Congress. It is the first time that such a wide range of civil society actors carry out an act of this dimension to support the socio-environmental agenda in Brazil.
The Act was aimed at protesting against the so called Destruction Package, a set of bills under consideration by Brazil’s Congress that, if approved, could pardon illegal invasions of public lands, weaken environmental licensing procedures, foster deforestation, as well as increase the invasion and illegal extortion of resources in indigenous lands.
“We demand that bills that would negatively affect the environment, climate and human rights are not passed. Parliamentarians must ensure that no proposal is voted until they follow scientific evidence, respond to the demands and needs of traditional and rural populations and are appropriate to address the climate emergency we are experiencing,” declared the organizations.
