Gender, Climate and Security: CIPÓ participates in an event on the sidelines of the 66ª CSW

On March 23, 2022 (Wednesday), from 9h to 10h30 EDT, CIPÓ participated in the event “Building Connections across the Gender, Climate and Security Nexus, on the sidelines of the 66th session of the Commission on the Status of Women. CIPÓ was represented by Maiara Folly (CIPÓ’s Programme Director), who chaired the panel.

  • Janani Vivekananda, Head of Programme Climate Diplomacy and Security at Adelphi

As we enter the third year of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Commission will take place in a hybrid format under the priority theme, “Achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes.” All side events and parallel events will be fully virtual.

Issues discussed:
• The role of women and young climate activists and environmental peacebuilders in conflict and fragile contexts.

• The role of women and young climate activists and environmental peacebuilders in conflict and fragile contexts;

• The role of Member States at the national and regional level, as well as through intergovernmental processes (CSW; COP; PBC) and UN organs (Security Council) to operationalize the gender-climate-security nexus;

• The status of UN system coordination and policy efforts to increase integrated programmatic efforts in line with Our Common Agenda, placing women and girls at the center of security policy.

The event was conducted in English with simultaneous translation to Spanish, French and Arabic.
