Climate Security in 3D: Integrating climate into security policy and programming

On March 23, Plataforma CIPÓ participated in the “Climate Security in 3D” dialogue, organized by Adelphi (Germany) and Wilton Park (United Kingdom), with support from the UK government. The event allowed donors and development agencies to share their experiences and lessons learned in integrating climate into security policies and initiatives, in the context of climate adaptation and resilience. In her presentation, CIPÓ’s Executive Director, Adriana Erthal Abdenur, drew attention to the need to incorporate a development and human rights perspective, as well as a gender perspective, into the climate and security agenda.

This working level dialogue brought together climate and conflict advisers/focal points from different government donor agencies to reflect on best practices. The following pratical considerations were discussed:

  • The role that bilateral aid can play in addressing the relationship between climate and security;
  • Joint identification of priority actions and preventive policy approaches (including with a focus on gender and social inclusion and to address regional/transnational issues);
  • Involvement of people from affected countries in dialogue with donors;
  • Common interests and potential for cooperation;
  • Capacity-building and training to ensure the right expertise exists within and across organisations to address climate-related conflict risks.
