CIPÓ comments on the impacts of major infrastructure projects on women

On July 28, 2022, during FOSPA (the Xth Pan-Amazonian Social Forum), CIPÓ’s Senior Researcher, Flávia do Amaral Vieira, gave an interview to the Movement of People Affected by Dams (MAB). The article analyzed the participation of women leaders in the fight against the impacts caused by dams.

CIPÓ’s Senior Researcher’s comment concerns how women are especially affected during the construction of mega-projects such as hydroelectric dams.

Women report body aches due to the pressure and uncertainties related to the construction of dams, which often cause significant impacts upon local communities. There is also an increase in domestic and sexual violence, because, at the time of construction of a dam, there is this arrival of a large number of male workers that impact the local way of life, she said. Furthermore, Flávia commented on the absence of measures to ensure that women are meaningfully represented within environmental licensing processes and in other spheres that are relevant to the prevention and respond to the impacts caused by the construction of major infrastructure projects.
