CIPÓ and UNAMAZ Sign Letter of Intent to Expand Pan-Amazon Cooperation

Plataforma CIPÓ and the Association of Amazonian Universities (UNAMAZ) signed on Wednesday (11/19), during COP30 in Belém, a Letter of Intent that marks a new phase of cooperation aimed at strengthening scientific, technological, and institutional integration in the Pan-Amazon region.

The agreement, signed by Maiara Folly, Executive Director of CIPÓ, and José Seixas Lourenço, Pro Tempore President of UNAMAZ, establishes the basis for deepening dialogue between the institutions and identifying priority areas of collaboration focused on the sustainable development of the region.

The Letter of Intent recognizes the strategic importance of UNAMAZ — a university network founded in 1987 with activities throughout the continental Amazon — in the production and management of scientific and technological knowledge. The document also highlights the role of Plataforma CIPÓ in promoting public policies, international cooperation, and climate action from Latin American and Global South perspectives.

Among the objectives of the agreement are: systematizing dialogues to identify regional priorities in science, technology, and innovation; promoting synergies and joint actions, including resource mobilization; strengthening UNAMAZ’s role in the context of Pan-Amazon integration; and exploring cooperation opportunities in areas related to sustainable development, environmental governance, and combating environmental crimes.

The commitment made during COP30 reinforces recent advances in Amazon cooperation driven by regional declarations such as the Belém Declaration (2023), the Brasília Declaration (2023), and the Bogotá Declaration (2025), which encourage closer ties between UNAMAZ, ACTO governments, and partner institutions.

Although non-binding, the Letter of Intent paves the way for future agreements and joint projects, representing a significant step toward strengthening regional integration and promoting sustainable development based on science, innovation, and multisectoral collaboration.
