CIPÓ attended Dilma Rousseff’s inauguration ceremony at the NBD and met with members of members of the presidential delegation to China

CIPÓ took part in the activities of Brazil’s presidential delegation to China. Researcher João Cumarú, who is based in the Asian country, participated in the inauguration ceremony of former president Dilma Rousseff as president of the New Development Bank (NBD), the BRICS bank, in Shanghai, where Cumarú introduced the projects developed by CIPÓ to a series of authorities.

In addition to Brazil’s former president, Cumarú met ministers Marina Silva (Environment and Climate Change) and Luciana Santos (Science, Technology and Innovation). Santos received a copy of the publication “Climate and international strategy: new directions for Brazil”. The document, launched by CIPÓ at COP27 in Egypt, was based on consultations with 70 actors from different sectors. The publication provides a vision for a progressive foreign policy that combines climate action with inclusive and sustainable development.

During the trip, presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Xi Jinping signed a joint declaration on the fight against climate change, pledging to expand, deepen and diversify the bilateral cooperation on the subject.

This is an instrument that Plataforma CIPÓ has called for in a series of events and publications. “It is an important declaration, because it demonstrates an increased interest in enhancing Brazil-China’s bilateral and multilateral cooperation on climate and environment issues,” stated Cumarú. According to him, the two countries are very significant international players and, therefore, raising the political weight of these issues in the bilateral relationship is a significant step.

“In addition to the political message it signals, the declaration points out some areas that may become priorities for the bilateral cooperation, such as the commitment to collaborate in efforts to eliminate deforestation”, stated the researcher. “The joint text also mentions ongoing initiatives that could be strengthened, such as technological cooperation, including in the area of satellites for forest monitoring.”
