Maiara Folly (Executive Director) and João Cumarú (researcher) at Plataforma CIPÓ published an article in the Folha de São Paulo newspaper arguing that Brazil and China should enhance their cooperation on climate and environmental issues, including by issuing a joint declaration on the subject. arguing that Brazil and China should enhance their cooperation on climate and environmental issues, including by issuing a joint declaration on the subject
For the authors, the political declaration should contain commitments to clean up supply chains from environmental crimes and express the intention to strengthen political coordination in multilateral forums, as well as work together towards the implementation of the three UN Conventions that originated in Rio de Janeiro in 1992: the agreements on climate, biodiversity and desertification.
Folly and Cumarú also argue that China should be encouraged to financially contribute to the Amazon Fund. After all, the country is the largest importer of Brazilian products associated with deforestation, such as beef and soy.
