In recent years, the Brazilian Amazon has witnessed an alarming increase in environmental crimes, including deforestation and illegal extraction of natural resources. Against this backdrop, Plataforma CIPÓ launched the book “Environmental Crimes in the Amazon: lessons and challenges from the frontline” on May 6. The book is edited by Maiara Folly and Flávia do Amaral Vieira, respectively the executive director and senior researcher of the organization.
The publication is the result of a collaborative effort among prosecutors, federal police officers, public servants, researchers, and representatives of governmental and non-governmental organizations. It aims to understand and analyze the challenges faced in protecting the Amazon. With thirteen chapters covering topics from gaps in environmental crimes’ legislation to the resistance strategies of indigenous peoples and traditional communities, the book provides a comprehensive view of the challenges and potential solutions for preserving the Amazon biome.
According to Folly, “Environmental Crimes in the Amazon” underscores the urgent need for coordinated and synergistic actions between government agencies and civil society to combat illicit activities in the region. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of international cooperation and the development and implementation of effective public policies that incorporate the knowledge and experience of indigenous and quilombola peoples, who have traditionally been the guardians of the forest.
