National Interests, Global Goods

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, certain world leaders have used the supposed tensions between advancing national interests and protecting global goods.

In “National Interest, Global Goods,” Adriana Erthal Abdenur and Maiara Folly argue that playing national and global spheres against each other creates a false dichotomy that pits international cooperation for the protection of global goods against the promotion of national interests.

On the contrary, the authors argue, “good multilateralism reinforces national sovereignty. A state is no less a state for being a part of the UN system.”
