On February 22, 2021, CIPÓ participated in the workshop “Solving Climate Change: Artificial Intelligence for a Sustainable and Inclusive Future”, organized by the Observer Research Foundation (Índia). The workshop brought together several experts and researchers with the aim of discussing the implications of new Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies for climate actions and vice versa.
CIPÓ’s researchers, Arthur Vieira and Gabrielle Alves, commented on the geopolitics of sustainable AI, highlighting the potential benefits of using AI mechanisms to curb deforestation in the Amazon basin, as well as anticipating the potential risks associated with the use of these technologies. In CIPÓ’s view, to effectively ensure the protection of local communities from human rights violations, investments in Artificial Intelligence must be accompanied by public policies aimed at environmental monitoring and conservation.
Finally, CIPÓ’s researchers drew attention to the need to explore South-South cooperation arrangements for information sharing, capacity building and data collection and analysis to ensure that countries with lower technological capabilities can make use of AI for climate action.
