On 12 April 2022, The Right to a Healthy Environment Coalition an expert seminar on ‘UN recognition of the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment: past developments and future prospects’ took place alongside the General Assembly in New York City. To demonstrate to Member States the widespread support for the adoption of the resolution, it featured interactive roundtable discussions with interventions by UN Special Rapporteurs, UN entities, academic experts, civil society leaders, business representatives, and environmental human rights defenders.
During the discussion, Plataforma CIPÓ raised the importance of an effective international mechanism for monitoring implementation of the right, including through meaningful participation by civil society. It also stressed that, in Latin America and the Caribbean, the Escazú Agreement provides a unique opportunity to promote the right to a healthy environment across the region, especially through the enhanced protection of environmental defenders.
Plataforma CIPÓ is a signatory of the Call for the Global Recognition of the Right to a Healthy Environment.
