‘European Perspectives on Taking Forward the UN75 Declaration: From Reflection to Innovation & Action’

On the occasion of the UN 75th anniversary in 2020, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the UN75 Declaration that outlines a vision and twelve distinct commitments toward enhancing international cooperation and strengthening “coordination and global governance for the common future of present and coming generations.” The document tasks the Secretary-General to report back by September 2021 “with recommendations to advance our common agenda and to respond to current and future challenges.”

With the goal of facilitating an independent reflection that contributes to the recommendations to be submitted by the Secretary-General, Plataforma CIPÓ, the Robert Bosch Stiftung GmbH, Federal Foreign Office of Germany, Stimson Center, Academic Council on the UN System (ACUNS), and Leiden University are pleased to invite you to our event to answer the following question: “In marking 75 years of the United Nations, how can last year’s period of intense reflection now contribute to a period of intense implementation, innovation, and strengthening of the world body?”

This event aims to provoke debate on the necessary efforts for translating the momentum generated in 2020 into tangible actions for reinvigorating and strengthening the United Nations, including in relation to climate global governance. While maintaining a global outlook, it will consider Europe’s role and potential in mobilizing capabilities, ideas and networks needed to advance our common agenda for a UN fit for the future.
