CIPÓ is one of the organizers of the event “Brazil in the Escazú Agreement”, which will take place on April 13 and 14, at the WWF auditorium, in Brasília, with the participation of authorities, specialists and environmental defenders from all over the country.
Spaces are limited and registrations are open until April 10, 2023 via this link.
Signed in 2018, in Costa Rica, the Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean, known as the Escazú Agreement, reinforce the links between human rights and environmental protection, imposing obligations on Member States regarding the rights of environmental defenders.
Provisions of the agreement include measures to investigate and punish attacks, threats or intimidation against defenders.
Last Thursday (March 23rd), CIPÓ and 142 other organizations sent a letter to Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Itamaraty) and nine other ministries, reinforcing the importance of mobilizing all the necessary efforts by public authorities for the rapid ratification of the agreement.
