On April 22 (Thursday), CIPÓ Executive Director Adriana Erthal Abdenur participated in the morning at GloboNews channel, offering live comments on the Leaders Summit on Climate. The discussion focused on the Leaders Summit on Climate. The event is part of a strategy to resume US international leadership in the climate area and to mobilize political will around COP 26, set to take place in Glasgow in November.
Chinese president Xi Jinping stressed that China intends to neutralize carbon emissions by 2060. After German Prime Minister Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron gave speeches, President Jair Bolsonaro spoke and said that Brazil will achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
Invited to analyze the summit, Abdenur emphasized that the United States plays an important role in guiding the climate crisis in foreign policy now that it is back in the Paris Agreement, but that there is still a long road ahead. After the speech by the President of Brazil, Abdenur stressed:
“When we look at the environmental and climate area in Brazil, we see a scorched earth scenario, with the dismantling of monitoring and inspection institutions. We hear an official discourse that has actively encouraged the invasion of public lands, illegal deforestation and mining.”
Ricardo Galvão, ex-director of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) and other journalists from GloboNews also offered their comments on the summit.
Since GloboNews it is a subscription channel, it is not possible to access the video openly on the internet.
