The article titled “OPEC of the rainforest” in the O Globo newspaper discusses the challenges and opportunities for the alliance formed by Brazil, Indonesia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo for the protection of forests.
Maiara Folly, the executive director of Plataforma CIPÓ, was interviewed as one of the sources for the article.
Folly not only highlighted the common challenges faced by these three countries but also addressed the impacts of the European Union’s deforestation-free legislation on Brazil, Indonesia, and the DRC.
Folly emphasized the importance of greater South-South cooperation, which can bring significant benefits on multiple fronts.
This includes amplifying the influence of the three nations in multilateral forums dedicated to forest issues and the ongoing search for climate financing. She further stated,
“These regions require significant financial incentives to promote forest preservation and implement mechanisms for the sustainable management of natural resources.”
