CIPÓ, Transforma, and Dejusticia publish EL PAÍS op-ed on a roadmap for forests

Plataforma CIPÓ, Transforma, and Dejusticia have published an op-ed in EL PAÍS América Futura presenting a roadmap developed by 47 Latin American civil society organizations to strengthen forest protection and accelerate the implementation of climate commitments across the region.

Titled “América Latina en defensa de sus bosques: contribuciones de la sociedad civil para lograrlo” (“Latin America in Defense of Its Forests: Civil Society Contributions to Make It Happen”), the article highlights the critical role of forests in maintaining global climate stability and argues that their protection depends on coordinated action by governments, civil society, Indigenous Peoples, traditional communities, and financial institutions.

The roadmap is structured around three priority pillars: securing the territorial rights of Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendant Peoples, and traditional communities; promoting deforestation- and ecosystem conversion-free supply chains; and aligning financial flows to scale up investments in conservation, restoration, and the bioeconomy.

The recommendations were developed to support the implementation of commitments already undertaken by countries and to contribute to the global agenda to halt and reverse deforestation and forest degradation by 2030.

The article underscores Latin America’s strategic role in protecting forest ecosystems and highlights the contribution of civil society in turning political commitments into concrete action.
