CIPÓ discusses monitoring the Summit of the Future at UN roundtable

The executive director of Plataforma CIPÓ, Maiara Folly, participated on Thursday (26) at the high-level roundtable “Taking the Summit of the Future Agenda Forward: Facilitating Implementation through Dialogue, Research & Monitoring,” held at the Baha’i International Community Office in New York.

In addition to CIPÓ, the hybrid event was organized and supported by the Stimson Center, Global Governance Innovation Network, Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development, Global Challenges Foundation, and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The event featured ambassadors from various countries, including Carlos Marcio Cozendey, Ambassador and Vice-Minister for Multilateral Political Affairs of Brazil, Florian Laudi, Director of the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, Freya Jackson, Director of Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights of the United Kingdom, and Guy Ryder, Director-General of the International Labour Organization, among other authorities. Participants discussed how dialogue, research, and monitoring can facilitate the implementation of the commitments from the Summit of the Future.

In her speech, Folly highlighted the importance of political will in the fight against hunger and poverty, quoting President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva: “In the 21st century, nothing is as absurd and unacceptable as the persistence of hunger and poverty considering that we have so many scientific and technological resources at our disposal.”

The executive director emphasized that while eliminating hunger requires an investment of about 40 billion dollars a year until 2030, this amount is just a fraction of the 2.4 trillion spent globally on militarism last year. “The discrepancy between these two figures demonstrates that often it is not a matter of lack of resources, but a matter of prioritization and political will,” she concluded, calling for support from coalitions like the Global Governance Innovation Network to turn the Pact’s ambitions into concrete actions.
