CIPÓ endorses letter from the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty

Plataforma CIPÓ is one of the signatory organizations of the open letter from the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, published on September 25. The document makes an urgent appeal to global leaders to prioritize concrete actions to eradicate hunger, malnutrition, and extreme poverty by 2030, highlighting the importance of global collaboration.

The Global Alliance initiative, announced in July 2024 by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during a G20 ministerial meeting in Rio de Janeiro, aims to mobilize resources and share effective policies to address these crises. The letter endorsed by CIPÓ underscores the need for commitment from all nations and stakeholders, emphasizing collective responsibility to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 and SDG 2, which focus on eradicating poverty and hunger.

The figures presented in the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2024 (SOFI) report, also mentioned in the letter, highlight the severity of the problem: approximately 733 million people faced hunger in the past year, and over 148 million children under the age of five suffer from chronic malnutrition. The document emphasizes the urgent need for action to reverse these trends and prevent more than 582 million people, half of them in Africa, from being affected by hunger by 2030.

By endorsing the letter, CIPÓ joins other signatories in urging global leaders to formalize their commitment to the Global Alliance by sending declarations of support to the Brazilian presidency of the G20. This commitment is expected to strengthen partnerships and mobilize the necessary resources to effectively tackle the food and poverty crises affecting the world.

The official launch of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty is scheduled for November 2024, during the G20 Summit, where Brazil will play a key role in leading the global agenda to eradicate hunger and extreme poverty. Until then, civil society, including CIPÓ, will continue to push for more countries to join the global effort to ensure a safer and more equitable future for all.
