CIPÓ and IDDRI Highlight Pathways for Just Energy Transitions in the G20 and COP30

In the text “From G20 to COP30, a Pathway to Climate Ambition and Just Transition?”, CIPÓ’s Executive Director, Maiara Folly, and the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI)’s Program Director, Céline Kauffmann, address crucial opportunities for the success of the G20’s climate and energy agendas, considering the adverse geopolitical context. CIPÓ and IDDRI co-lead Task Force 2 of the T20 – “Sustainable Climate Action and Just and Inclusive Energy Transitions.”

The publication highlights the need for mitigating the negative impacts the energy transition could have upon certain groups. Folly and Kauffmann suggest that the G20, with its political and financial leadership, can play a key role in promoting a just transition agenda, particularly with the succession of the rotating presidencies of India, Brazil, and South Africa.

Among the proposals presented are the implementation of coordinated international taxation on the wealth of the richest individuals and the reform of the Bretton Woods institutions and Multilateral Development Banks. The authors argue that these actions can generate additional financial resources to support transitions that conciliante climate action with the fight against inequalities, aligning with the priorities of the G20 and COP30.

The text is available in English and French on IDDRI’s website.
