On Thursday (14/12), the Global Challenges Foundation released the “Global Catastrophic Risk Report 2023,” featuring key proposals to advance global governance on today’s most pressing challenges. In total, there are twelve essays, in English, authored by prominent experts.
Maiara Folly, Plataforma CIPÓ’s executive director, contributes to one of the chapters titled “Positive Incentives and Partnerships: Building Multilateral Responses to Ensure Fair and Sustainable Global Trade.”
Folly highlights significant environmental setbacks witnessed in recent years. “The globe’s large emitters continue to fall short of meeting their national greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets as agreed upon in the Paris Agreement, while high deforestation rates continue to threaten biodiversity in several regions”, she warns.
According to her, part of this environmental destruction is driven by international trade, and specifically by an increasing demand for commodities sourced from endangered forests and biomes. “Existing global governance institutions have failed to establish a comprehensive global framework to regulate supply chains”.
