In an article for Nexo, Maiara Folly sheds light on the danger of lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS), including concerns related to international humanitarian law violations, the risks of algorithm bias, cyberattacks and the absence of legal accountability for the inappropriate use of these weapons.
The development of LAWS, capable of selecting and firing at targets without human intervention, is not a distant reality. There is an urgent need to discuss the risks of such systems in open conflict zones, but also in public security contexts.
According to the latest opinion poll on the topic, 62% of respondents in 28 countries oppose the use of LAWS. Brazil was the country where opposition to this technology grew the most since 2018 (62% of Brazilians oppose LAWS, an increase of 16%).
The ‘Campaign to Stop Killer Robots’, of which Plataforma CIPÓ is a member, pushes for the creation of an international treaty that prohibits LAWS and establishes legal and humanitarian limits to this technology.
