“G20: Structure and Opportunities for the Participation of Brazilian Civil Society”

As Brazil prepares to take over the G20 presidency in December 2023, Plataforma CIPÓ releases a publication unraveling the structure and functioning of the group, comprising some of the world’s major economies. The policy note “G20: Structure and Opportunities for the Participation of Brazilian Civil Society” is already available for download, in Portuguese only, on our website.

Across 20 pages, the document includes an organizational chart, infographics, and tables, aiming to expand public knowledge on the subject, as well as mechanisms for dialogue and impact on the group’s decisions.

The G20 intends to coordinate global actions on economic, financial, and sustainable development issues, encompassing topics impacting these three areas, such as climate change, global health crises, and digital transformation.

Until November 2024, when the G20 Leaders’ Summit will take place in Rio de Janeiro, different Brazilian cities will host over a hundred official meetings involving ministers, diplomats, international organizations, and authorities from member countries. These meetings in Brazil could result in decisions affecting people worldwide.

As a result, CIPÓ considers it crucial for Brazilian society, including social movements, non-governmental organizations, research institutes, the private sector, parliamentarians, and federal entities (such as municipalities), to identify ways to discuss and influence the G20’s work agenda.

For this to happen, it is necessary, first and foremost, to deepen the understanding of this broad range of actors regarding the G20, its structure, functioning, and priorities, focusing on existing opportunities and channels for social participation.

Thus, the first section of the policy note provides a brief overview of the history, addressed themes, and organizational structure of the G20. The second section presents opportunities and mechanisms for social participation within the bloc, highlighting its engagement groups, particularly the Civil20 (C20) and the Think20 (T20). Finally, brief concluding remarks are presented.
