In an article for Nexo, CIPÓ researchers Viviana Porto and Flávia do Amaral Vieira, along with Maiara Folly (executive director), address the first major international conference held in Brazil during the new Lula government: the Amazon Summit, which took place between August 8th and 9th in Belém do Pará.
According to the authors, the heads of state summit represents an opportunity to build consensus for the adoption of a unified position on regional priorities within multilateral forums, such as the UN and the G20.
“Regional coordination will be essential to deal with common challenges in areas such as environmental racism, which disproportionately affects indigenous peoples and traditional communities, in addition to the increase in criminality, especially environmental crimes such as illegal mining and illegal logging, and also organized crime,” the authors argue.
