Maiara Folly, executive director and co-founder of Plataforma CIPÓ, is one of the authors of the publication “Strengthening Citizen Participation in Global Governance”. Written in partnership with Aishwarya Machani, Andrea Ordóñez Llanos, and David Steven, the article was published today – six months before the Summit of the Future –, and is a collaboration between Plataforma CIPÓ, United Nations Foundation, Iswe Foundation, Blue Smoke and Southern Voice.
The paper addresses the need for civil society participation while strengthening global governance within the UN system, pointing out gaps and spaces for increasing citizen participation in the decision-making process. Starting with the history of civil society participation within the UN system, the text identifies possible spaces and models for social participation. In the end, it brings recommendations for the Summit of the Future and for the subsequent cycle of international cooperation, which will include the celebration of the UN’s 80th anniversary and the election for Secretary-General.
