In an article published in Carta Capital magazine, Maiara Folly and Ana Garcia highlight the strategic role of BRICS+ in strengthening global climate cooperation. With ten members, the group more broadly represents the Global South and can amplify the voice of these economies on climate issues. The authors emphasize the importance of Brazil’s leadership in events such as the G20 presidency in 2024, the upcoming BRICS summit, and COP30.
Folly and Garcia point out that despite this potential, BRICS+ faces challenges, including the lack of updated climate targets and the absence of unified positions in multilateral negotiations. They argue that the Brazilian proposal to create a “BRICS Climate Leadership Agenda” could strengthen the group in key areas — climate finance, technological cooperation, and carbon accounting.
Maiara Folly is executive director and co-founder of Plataforma CIPÓ. Ana Garcia is a fellow at CIPÓ, professor at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ), and researcher at the BRICS Policy Center.
