Lessons from the Amazon railways for Chinese investors in Brazil

In an article for Diálogo Chino, the co-founders of CIPÓ, Adriana Abdenur and Maiara Folly — in partnership with Maurício Santoro, professor at the Department of International Relations at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) — write about the impacts of China-financed rail projects in the Brazilian Amazon. The analysis is based on a study produced by Abdenur, Folly and Santoro for the Carnegie Endowment for Peace, which addresses plans related to the Ferrogrão project and the main social and environmental tensions related to this railway line, which is designed to cross sections of the Amazon and the Cerrado to deliver commodities to Brazilian ports in the Amazon for export abroad.

As Chinese companies become involved in projects with high socio-environmental risks, such as Ferrogrão, there will be increased pressure for greater dialogue with Brazilian actors
