On April 20, Plataforma CIPÓ researcher, Gabrielle Alves, participated in the Youth Perspectives on Climate Change symposium, organized by the University of Oklahoma’s Center for Peace and Development and the Security in Context initiative.
The event was also attended by young change agents from Brazil, Maldives, the Sarayaku Indigenous Community of Ecuador, the Shiwiar Indigenous Community of Ecuador and the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.
The climate crisis is often perceived as a matter of the future. In contrast, the stories of our speakers and their communities for the symposium highlight decades of environmental injustices and climate challenges. Speakers at this symposium addressed key issues, from environmental racism and marine conservation to the crucial role of indigenous communities as front-line leaders on the environment.
The symposium was a Global South climate awareness event with a focus on indigenous people. It provided an opportunity for speakers to advocate for communities in need of critical attention and for participants to challenge common misconceptions about the current climate crisis. The symposium was a CPD and SIC collaboration, supported by a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
