Maiara Folly, Plataforma CIPÓ’s Executive Director, is one of the confirmed speakers at the event “Leveraging Just Transitions Across Adaptation, Mitigation and Trade Policies,” taking place next Saturday (June 8) in Bonn, Germany. Representatives from the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, Climate Strategies, and the Stockholm Environment Institute will also participate.
The in-person meeting, co-organized by CIPÓ, is part of the official United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) program at SB60. The aim is to demonstrate that an integrated approach to just transitions can foster ambitious climate action.
The central premise of the event is that the proliferation of climate trade policies should promote an international trade system that drives sustainable development, increases equity, and strengthens resilience, ensuring that the transition to a climate-centered trade system is just.
The backdrop of this debate lies in the outcome of the first Global Stocktake, which recognized the importance of an open international trade system to enable ambitious climate action. Just transitions, which emphasize participation and collaboration, provide a useful framework for ensuring that new trade policies accelerate climate action, support collective sustainable development, and build fair resilience.
In recent years, the intersections between climate change mitigation, adaptation, and trade policies have intensified, actively contributing to climate commitments. However, as major nations increase their climate and trade ambitions, the impacts of these initiatives are felt beyond their borders, exacerbating existing vulnerabilities in developing nations and impacting these countries’ capacity for adaptation and decarbonization.
