This Thursday (13th) in Brasília, a group of civil society organizations, including CIPÓ, will launch the Escazú Brazil Movement, which aims to encourage Brazil’s ratification of the first legally binding treaty on environmental and human rights in Latin America and the Caribbean. The event is taking place from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm in the WWF auditorium, and will feature the participation of state ministers, parliamentarians and experts on the subject.

Signed in 2018 in Costa Rica, the Escazú Agreement strengthens the links between human rights and environmental protection, imposing responsibilities on Member States regarding the rights of environmental defenders.
Confirmed speakers include: Minister Sonia Guajajara (Indigenous People); the Deputy Secretary from the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change, Mauro Pires; the Director of the Environment Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Angélica Ikeda; and federal congresswoman Célia Xakriabá, a member of the Parliamentary Front in Defense of Indigenous Peoples Rights; as well as environmental defenders and experts, such as Claudelice Santos, from Instituto Zé Claudio e Maria, and Plataforma CIPÓ’s researcher Gabrielle Alves.
The agreement includes provisions to investigate and punish attacks, threats or intimidation against defenders.
The Escazú Brazil Movement is currently led by the following organizations: Artigo 19, Engajamundo, the Brazilian Forum of NGOs, Social Movements for the Environment and Development (FBOMS), Fundo Casa, Esquel Brasil Foundation, Instituto Centro de Vida (ICV), Plataforma CIPÓ, Transparência Internacional – Brasil, WWF-Brasil and Instituto Nupef.
Other partner organizations are expected to formally join the coalition following its official launch in Brasília .
