On June 16 2021, The Monte Alegre State Park (PEMA) was featured in the article “This is Pará: get to know the prehistoric civilization of Pará that gave rise to the Amazonian man”, published by the Pará-based newspaper O Liberal. The publication highlights the cultural value of the Park, the oldest archaeological site of Amazon region, with cave paintings dating back 11,200 years.
The article, written by journalist Fábio Barbosa, comments on the choice of PEMA as one of the 25 world heritage sites to be supported by the World Monuments Fund. The site’s nomination to the 2022 World Monuments Watch was made by Plataforma CIPÓ in partnership with archaeologists Edithe Pereira (from the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi) and Claide Morais (Federal University of Western Pará).
