Plataforma CIPÓ has joined a new joint submission by Brazilian civil society to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) under the United Arab Emirates Just Transition Work Programme (JTWP). This United Nations initiative seeks to consolidate pathways for a climate transition that is not only effective in reducing emissions but also socially just and inclusive.
The document brings together contributions aimed at strengthening the integration of climate justice into international negotiations, with emphasis on the territorial impacts of mitigation and adaptation policies, biodiversity protection, and the development of sustainable critical mineral supply chains — a strategic issue given the rapid expansion of clean energy technologies.
The submission was collectively developed with Geledés – Instituto da Mulher Negra, Conectas Direitos Humanos, LACLIMA, ClimaInfo, Observatório do Clima, Engajamundo, Greenpeace Brasil, International Initiative Brasil, the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, and the Instituto Socioambiental, highlighting the coordination among different civil society organizations around a more equitable climate agenda.
For Beatriz Mattos, Project and Research Coordinator at Plataforma CIPÓ, the consolidation of the just transition agenda within international negotiations represents an important step forward:
just transition goes beyond debates on mitigation targets and instruments and speaks to the very quality of climate action itself. Opening submission processes to civil society is essential to bring the real impacts of climate policies on territories and historically marginalized communities to the center of the debate.”
The incorporation of the just transition agenda into United Nations negotiations helps broaden the social dimension of climate policy, connecting global decisions with local realities and reinforcing the importance of meaningful civil society participation in multilateral processes.
By joining this joint submission, CIPÓ reaffirms its commitment to producing applied knowledge and engaging strategically in international spaces, contributing to climate governance guided by principles of equity, sustainability, and rights.
