CIPÓ joins leadership of global campaign for a more inclusive UN — and a woman at the helm

Last Monday (2), President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva officially announced Brazil’s support for Michelle Bachelet’s candidacy for the position of United Nations (UN) Secretary-General. This endorsement underscores the importance the Brazilian government places on strengthening multilateralism and increasing female representation in the highest spheres of global governance, within an international context of cooperation and equity.

In November 2023, Plataforma CIPÓ—in partnership with the Club de Madrid and the Ministry of Women—facilitated a meeting at the Planalto Palace in Brasília. The event brought together President Lula, First Lady Rosângela da Silva, and international leaders, including the former President of Chile and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet; the former President of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla; and Aminata Touré, the former Prime Minister of Senegal. Centered on the theme “Women in Power: Strategies for Implementing the UN SDGs to Achieve Gender Equality,” the meeting reinforced the importance of building bridges between Brazilian and international perspectives to tackle structural barriers to democracy and women’s full participation in decision-making spaces.

A core pillar of CIPÓ’s institutional advocacy is the creation of dialogue mechanisms that connect governments, civil society, and leaders, thereby amplifying visibility and the exchange of experiences regarding international cooperation, governance, and the defense of human rights.

Plataforma CIPÓ values initiatives that promote constructive dialogue and cooperation among diverse actors to build collective solutions for contemporary challenges. A prime example is the 1 for 8 Billion campaign, a global civil society initiative working to make the selection of UN leadership more transparent, inclusive, and participatory. Alongside various organizations, CIPÓ serves on the campaign’s Steering Committee, which advocates for more governments to support the nomination of women to end 80 years of male dominance in the organization’s highest office.

We remain steadfast in our mission to strengthen the role of women in global governance and to broaden the inclusion of diverse perspectives within decision-making spaces and multilateral systems.
