During the UN Climate Change Conference (SB62), taking place from June 16 to 26 in Bonn, Germany, Plataforma CIPÓ is launching the policy brief “From the G20 to the UNFCCC: Pathways to Just and Inclusive Transitions.”
Authored by Beatriz Mattos (Research Coordinator) and Maiara Folly (Executive Director), the publication proposes an expanded, rights-based definition of just transitions. It argues that the shift to clean energy must be aligned with efforts to reduce inequalities, protect human rights, and promote sustainable development—especially in countries of the Global South.
The document also puts forward recommendations to strengthen the UNFCCC’s role, including:
- The development of High-Level Principles on Just Transitions, with emphasis on intersectionality, social participation, and accessible financing;
- The creation of a Matchmaking Platform to facilitate the mobilization of financial and technological resources for the implementation of just transition policies and projects;
- The need for dedicated and additional financing to support these transitions, alongside the gradual phase-out of fossil fuel subsidies.
The Bonn Conference (SB62) brings together the Subsidiary Bodies for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) and for Implementation (SBI) of the UNFCCC, and aims to lay the groundwork for decisions at the upcoming COP30, to be held in Brazil in 2025.
The policy brief was produced with support from the Energy Transition Fund, a project sponsored by Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors.
