CIPÓ follows Climate Week in Addis Ababa with a focus on just transition

From September 1 to 6, Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, hosts Climate Week, held under the theme “Dialogues for Ambition and Implementation.” The event, one of the main preparatory spaces within the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) ahead of COP30 in Brazil, aims to strengthen debates, expand intercontinental cooperation, and foster global partnerships.

Plataforma CIPÓ is represented at the event by its Executive Director, Maiara Folly, who attended the 4th Dialogue of the Just Transition Work Programme (JTWP) on Monday (Sept. 1) and Tuesday (Sept. 2).

According to her, the discussions revealed challenges and divergences among countries. “On one side, developed countries advocate for greater ambition in phasing out fossil fuels, sharing experiences in renewable energy investment. On the other, Global South countries highlighted the obstacles they face, such as high capital costs to access green technology investments and the limitations imposed by intellectual property regimes.”

Unilateral trade measures, which divided groups like the G77 + China and the European Union, were also a point of tension. “It was two days of significant divisions and difficulties on this topic, which is not easy, but one we need to advance on ahead of COP30,” Folly stated.

CIPÓ’s participation in Climate Week reinforces the importance of Brazilian civil society contributing to a more inclusive and ambitious multilateral process, especially considering Brazil’s leading role up to Belém.
