The political platform of the 1 for 8 Billion campaign, which aims to make the selection process for the next UN Secretary-General more transparent and inclusive, is now live. The launch took place this Friday (20th) in New York, during the event “Madame Secretary-General: 1 Year to Prepare the Ground for a Fair and Inclusive SG Selection,” co-organized by Plataforma CIPÓ and Blue Smoke.
The initiative presents recommendations for the upcoming selection process, including measures that Member States should adopt to ensure an inclusive and equitable process for candidates from around the world.
Among these recommendations are: exclusively considering the nomination of female candidates, publishing a joint letter that transparently outlines the process by the start of the 80th session of the General Assembly, and ensuring that Member States and the public are kept informed about the progress of the process.
The nomination phase for the next UN Secretary-General is expected to begin at the end of 2025. The event represents an important step toward building more inclusive global governance and mobilizing civil society.
